On Sunday, the rotting body of a newborn baby was found in the neighborhood of Oyede Avenue Plaza in Sango-Ota, Ogun State.

The infant girl, identified as 21-year-old Esther Ojuko, is said to have been killed by throwing her into a nearby compound while she was wrapped in a sack, according to a police source who spoke with PUNCH Online.

The age of the dead baby at the time of the tragedy was unknown to our correspondent.

Ojuko may have been mentally unstable at the time of the incident, according to the state police command.

According to information obtained by PUNCH from the command, several locals started searching the region for the cause of the stench when it started to take over.

According to information received, the smell was coming from a sack behind a nearby compound, which a local later found out.

The people living there were shocked to discover the newborn’s tightly wrapped, decaying carcass when they opened the sack.

One of the residents, only known as Ogunmuyiwa, reportedly went to the Sango-Ota Police Division to report the crime once it was discovered.

When our journalist got in touch with Omolola Odutola, the public relations officer for the state police, she confirmed the occurrence and informed us that the mother had been taken into custody.

“The mother is in our custody for suspected murder. We have begun a full investigation into the circumstances behind her action.

“In the meantime, the deceased baby has been deposited at the Ifo General Hospital mortuary for autopsy,” she told our correspondent via WhatsApp message on Monday.
