Rivers Crisis: Defected Lawmakers Withdraw Impeachment Notice Against Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s impeachment notice has been withdrawn by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who switched parties, joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

During their Wednesday, December 20, session, the MPs who are thought to be loyal to Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, retracted the notice of impeachment.

They claim that the withdrawal complies with the directive in the agreement reached during a stakeholder meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Monday in Abuja over the current situation in Rivers State.

They went on to say that respect for the President was the reason behind the choice.

According to Naija News, Rivers State has been experiencing a political impasse between Wike, the outgoing governor, and Fubara, his successor, in recent weeks.

Parallel sessions of the State House of Assembly, a plot to remove the governor from office, the demolition of the Assembly facility and a wave of resignations from pro-Wike commissioners in Fubara’s cabinet were further developments brought about by the rivalry.

In an effort to heal the gap between Wike and Fubara, President Bola Tinubu met with the parties involved after consulting with Peter Odili, the state’s former governor.

After the roughly three-hour-long discussion, a truce was mediated in the Aso Villa in Abuja.
