Rwanda police detains serial killer suspect after finding victim bodies in kitchen

According to police and local media reports, a man was detained in Rwanda after more than ten bodies were found buried in a hole in the kitchen of his residence in the country’s capital, Kigali.

The suspected serial killer, 34, was said to have lured his victims to his rented house in Kicukiro, a Kigali suburb, by luring them from bars, according to police reports on Wednesday.

Local media reported the discovery of over ten bodies, and an anonymous source with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) told AFP that there have been 14 confirmed fatalities to date.

The final number “will be determined by forensic investigations,” RIB spokesman Thierry Murangira told the news agency in response to the news agency’s request for confirmation of a number.

He claimed, as quoted by local media, that the suspect had been initially detained in July on suspicion of robbery and rape among other offenses but had been released on bail for want of evidence.

The bodies were found in a pit he had dug in his kitchen after he was arrested again on Tuesday as a result of ongoing investigations.

The suspect admitted that he learned how to kill by emulating well-known serial killers. According to the RIB source, he disintegrated some of his victims in acid.

Before stalking them, he would research his targets. He typically targeted people who were least likely to have close family or friends watching out for them.

Murangira claimed that the suspect had admitted to the killings while being questioned and that initial research had revealed that both male and female victims had been killed.

“He operated by luring his victims, mostly prostitutes, to his home where he would rob them of their phones and belongings and then strangled them to death and buried them in a hole dug in the kitchen of his rented house,” he added.
