The Peoples Democratic Party caucus in the Senate has asked Bukola Saraki, the president of the upper legislative chamber, to declare the seat of Andy Uba vacant.
Andy Uba, a former PDP member, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and formally made the announcement on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.
But in reaction, the minority leader of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, asked that apart from declaring his seat vacant, Uba should be removed as the chairman of the committee on public accounts.
Before officially announcing his defection, the senator had performed the registration exercise of the APC in his ward.
Meanwhile, Senate President Bukola Saraki read a letter from the presidency on the floor of the upper house concerning the nomination of Samuel Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
In the letter written by acting President Yemi Osinbajo, the presidency requested that the Senate move ahead with screening and consequent confirmation of Onnoghen as the country’s substantive chief justice.
