Senate inaugurate Yohanna as Abbo’s replacement

Amos Yohanna was officially sworn in by the Senate on Wednesday to serve as the senator for the Adamawa North Senatorial District.

Jibrin Barau, the Deputy Senate President, who oversaw the plenary, administered the oath of office.

Yohanna, a PDP member, takes Abbo’s place after he was fired by the Appeal Court on Monday of last week.

All Progressives Congress member Abbo was fired by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

Presided over by Justice C.E. Nwosu-Iheme, the three-member court rendered a decision on Monday and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to grant Yohanna a Certificate of Return, designating her as the legitimately elected representative who will represent the area in the National Assembly.

The tribunal ruling that had previously recognized Abbo of the All Progressives Congress as the senate election winner was overturned by the appeal.

Abbo was proclaimed the victor of the parliamentary election held on February 25, 2023, by INEC.

However, the PDP, Yohanna, took the election’s result to the tribunal after being dissatisfied with the electoral body’s ruling.

The panel ruled that Yohanna’s plea was without merit and dismissed it.

The PDP candidate sought the Appeal Court through his attorney Johnson Usman, SAN, because he was unhappy with the tribunal’s decision.

Following the parties’ arguments, the Court of Appeal concurred with Usman that the results submitted unequivocally demonstrated noncompliance with the Election Act of 2022, pursuant to Section 137 of the Act.

Following the deduction of both parties’ illegitimate ballots, the court determined that Yohanna and the PDP had won the election with a majority of valid votes.

In the wake of the judgment Senator Abbo called it a coup against democracy but urged his followers to remain composed.
