Senator Victor Umeh, chairman of the Senate Committee on Population and NIMC and representative of Anambra Central under the Labour Party (LP), has refuted allegations that he received a $10,000 bribe to support the state of emergency declaration in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Umeh Dismisses Bribery Allegations
The senator labeled the reports “baseless blackmail” and clarified that he was not among the 42 senators allegedly given $10,000 before the emergency rule was passed.
“I did not receive any money to support the approval of the state of emergency in Rivers State. I was not at any meeting where such payments were allegedly made,” Umeh stated firmly.
His Whereabouts on the Alleged Bribery Day
On Tuesday evening, he attended the Senate Guest House for the traditional IFTAR (Breaking of Fast) gathering.
He led Christian prayers after Senator Adamu Aliero conducted the Muslim prayers and prayed for peace and reconciliation in Nigeria.
He emphasized that no discussions about a state of emergency took place at the event.
Reaffirming His Integrity
Umeh described the allegations as an attempt to tarnish his reputation and cause disaffection between him and his constituents.
“I will not be distracted by false claims. I will continue to serve my people with dedication and honor,” he vowed.
Reports had alleged that senators received cash bribes at the private lodge of Senate President Godswill Akpabio to approve Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s suspension. However, Umeh strongly denies any involvement in a bribery scheme.
