The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has said it will sue Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the disbursement of a token to senators by the Clerk of the National Assembly.
In a brief statement via its official Twitter handle on Thursday, SERAP said it is suing Akpabio over the ‘holiday allowance’ while some 137 million poor Nigerians face severe economic hardship.
The tweet reads: “We’re suing the Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the alleged payments of “holiday allowances” by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the “various accounts” of senators while some 137 million poor Nigerians face severe economic hardship.”
Gistlover reports that the Red Chamber, on Monday, concluded the screening and confirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees and thereafter adjourned the plenary to September 26.
Akpabio, in a video trending online, found himself in an embarrassing situation after revealing that money has been sent to senators to enjoy their holiday.
Addressing his colleagues during plenary on Tuesday, Akpabio said ‘a token’ had been sent by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Magaji Tambuwal, to the lawmakers to enjoy their holidays.
The statement led to a rowdy session, and upon realising he was speaking before live television and journalists, Akpabio quickly retracted the statement.
