Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Sharafudeen Raji Gbadebo, has addressed the growing controversy surrounding religious identity, firmly stating that it is impossible for someone to be both a Christian and a Muslim.
Sheikh Gbadebo, who is the director of the Al-Madeenah Islamic Center in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, made this clarification following Fuji legend K1 De Ultimate’s recent comments during a viral interview.
K1 De Ultimate, whose real name is Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, openly declared himself a proud and bona fide member of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC). He also revealed that he built a parish for the church, stressing his deep spiritual connection:
“I am a proud, bona fide member of the Celestial Church. I even went as far as building a parish myself. My connection with God runs deep. I seek Him everywhere I go,” K1 stated.
In response, a video surfaced online showing Sheikh Gbadebo addressing the issue. Speaking candidly, the Islamic scholar emphasized that Islam and Christianity are distinct religions, and attempting to practice both renders a person a non-believer (Kaafir) in Islam.
He said:
“Someone is attending Christian vigils and also observes solah (Muslim prayers) in the mosque — tell the person he is a Kaafir (unbeliever). Islam does not endorse being a Muslim and a Christian at the same time. You cannot embrace Islam while following another religion.”
Sheikh Gbadebo further lamented the increasing religious confusion in Yorubaland, warning that seeking answers from multiple faiths leads people away from true Islamic teachings.
The cleric’s remarks have sparked widespread discussion online, adding another layer to the ongoing debate over faith and religious identity in Nigeria’s multi-religious society.
