Rising Afrobeats artist Favor Ekah Ernest, or HYCE, revealed that teaming up with music legend Davido for the remix of his hit track ‘Ogechi’, featuring ‘Boypee’, was a major highlight in his career.
He described the remix’s origin: “I wrote ‘Ogechi’ following a campus tour in Enugu, where I performed with Topboy Zyno. That’s when I met Boypee and caught up with Brown Joel, who I knew from Lagos.”
“Our instant chemistry sparked a creative fire. After the show, we decided to collaborate and, upon returning to Lagos, headed straight to Dawie’s studio to record ‘Ogechi’. We knew we had something special.
“We teased ‘Ogechi’ on TikTok with a snippet video, and the response was overwhelming, with hundreds of thousands of posts in just days, before its official release.
“We had always envisioned a Davido feature, knowing it would elevate the song. Thankfully, Cubana Chief Priest, a mentor to Boypee and a huge ‘Ogechi’ fan, made it happen.
“One night, Boypee called, saying Davido wanted to join forces on ‘Ogechi’. We met at his place, just two nights before his wedding to Chioma.
“Davido was enthusiastic, declaring, ‘This will be released on my wedding day’. The remix was engineered immediately, and the rest is history; a global smash hit. It was a dream come true, our prayer answered.”
The journey to this important moment started when HYCE launched ‘Ogechi’ in 2023. The song’s lively beat and memorable hooks quickly caught the attention of fans, but HYCE realized that to elevate it further, he needed something unique.
That’s when Cubana Chief Priest, who mentors HYCE’s collaborator Boypee, got involved. “He believed in ‘Ogechi’ from the beginning and recognized its potential,” HYCE shares. “He connected me with Davido, and everything changed from there.”
In 2024, the ‘Ogechi remix’ took HYCE to new levels. The song’s worldwide success opened doors for him, bringing critical praise and many award nominations.
