Presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore has thrown his support behind Lagos-based corps member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, as she faces potential disciplinary action for criticizing the Tinubu administration in a viral video.
Raye, who is serving in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos, drew public attention after she voiced concerns about the rising cost of living under President Bola Tinubu’s government. She also described Lagos as a “smelly state,” a remark that quickly gained traction online and sparked mixed reactions.
Following her refusal to take down the video, Raye was reportedly summoned by her Local Government Inspector (LGI) for questioning, with indications that disciplinary measures might follow.
In a show of solidarity, Sowore, along with his legal team, met with Raye and accompanied her to the LGI’s office. He shared an update on his X page, posting a video of the meeting and writing:
“The journey with youth corper, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, has commenced in Lagos. She is scheduled to appear before the LGI today, and we will escort her to their offices. We are all en route with attorneys. @mrfestusogun @yinka_oyesomi and @justiceojienoh.”
The case has sparked widespread debate. While some Nigerians commend Raye for speaking out, others argue that her remarks were inappropriate for a serving corps member, as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) maintains a stance of political neutrality.
As the situation develops, many are awaiting further updates on the outcome of Raye’s meeting with the LGI and the potential consequences of her statements.
