In an effort to combat poverty and effect of fuel subsidy removal, the Kano State Government, led by Governor Abba Yusuf Kabir, has finalized plans to provide rams and goats to 6,000 individuals as part of its animal feeding and reproduction initiatives.
This was revealed by Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, project coordinator for the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP), during the beginning of the distribution program in the state’s Rano, Kibiya, Bunkure, Kura, Garun Mallam, and Sumaila Local Government Areas.
He explained that the initiative targeted vulnerable people, particularly women and those from lower socioeconomic status in the state, and was supported by the Islamic Development Bank and the Lives and Livelihood Fund.
He said: “It was envisaged that women and youths in rural communities breed livestock because they serve as source of food, income, and manure among others.
“Therefore, the state government is determined to support you with small ruminants through KSADP, so that your livelihoods can be improved.”
The project coordinator revealed that participants would receive the livestock for free, and those receiving fattening ram and goats would also receive support in the form of animal feed and medications.
However, due to the nation’s current economic circumstances, he advised program participants to take advantage of the chance to better their financial situation.
Muhammad claimed that the KSADP has trained and equipped community animal health workers with the tools they need to deliver professional services to livestock owners and reduce livestock health issues.
Kala Bunkure, one of the recipients, expressed gratitude to the Islamic Development Bank, the LLF, and the state government for helping them and pledged to take excellent care of the animals.
