Alex Iwobi signed a new long-term deal at Arsenal, the Premier League club announced on Friday. Arsenal did not specify the length of the deal for the 22-year-old Nigeria international, who came through the ranks with the Gunners, but reports said it would run until 2023. Midfielder Iwobi scored three goals in 26 league games under the now-departed Arsene Wenger last season.
“It’s always been my childhood dream to represent Arsenal,” he told Arsenal Player. “To get an extended contract is an amazing feeling and I hope I’m doing the Arsenal family proud, as well as my family.”
Iwobi, the nephew of Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha, played in three of his country’s matches at the World Cup in Russia.
“I’m very pleased Alex has signed a new contract with us,” said new boss Unai Emery.
“He is a great example of a player who can succeed from the academy through hard work and I look forward to working with him and our other talented young players in the squad.”
Arsenal’s new manager Emery is preparing the Gunners for a match against Lazio which rounds off their their pre-season friendly. Arsenal begins their Premier League campaign against last season champions, Manchester City at the Emirates on August 12.
Alex Iwobi played his first Champions League match as a substitute against Bayern Munich. He was a regular playing member of the Arsenal squad in the 2015 – 2016 and 2016 – 2017 FA Cup, and the team that won the Community Shield.
He made his debut for the Nigerian senior football squad in a friendly match against DR Congo, and was also part of the Nigerian 35 member squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics but had to pull out before the final squad was announced due to injury.
