The Supreme Court scheduled a hearing to decide Abba Kabir Yusuf’s fate as governor of Kano State for Friday, January 12.
Recall that Yusuf, who was elected on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), was dismissed by the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was given an order by the court to issue a certificate of return to The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Nasir Yusuf Gawuna for the March 2023 election.
Governor Yusuf, however, had appealed to the Appeal Court because he was dissatisfied with the Tribunal’s decision.
However, the appellate court concluded that the governor could not have been considered legitimately sponsored for the election because he was not a party member at the time of the election, even if it upheld his dismissal.
Barrister Bashir Tudun Wuzirci, the NNPP’s legal team secretary, said Daily Trust on Wednesday that the verdict by the supreme court is scheduled for Friday.
“Yes, it is officially confirmed. They have told us to appear on Friday for the judgment.
“They told us that each party should not have more than two counsels in attendance.
“This, they said, is because they will be delivering seven judgments on that same Friday,” he said.
In addition, unless there is a last-minute change of heart, the supreme court will rule on six additional governorship cases that are pending before it.
So far, the Supreme Court has deferred rulings in the governorship election issues pertaining to Plateau, Delta, and Abia State.
