The nine corps members were paid their last respect by their colleagues who converged at the Specialist Hospital, Jalingo.
Corps member, Ezebuihe Charles who shared photos of the sad moment, wrote;
“We came to taraba state together with the intention of going together but death took nine of you away from us. They obeyed the call to serve their fathers land not knowing that death was also calling. The news of your drowning brought great shock to us. Death you have done your worst to us. Their families bid them fare well to serve their fathers land, now they are being brought home in lifeless state. To their families, may God grant you the grace to bear the lost and to our falling hero’s, may your souls find peace with God.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Taraba State Police Command, ASP David Missal, who confirmed the death of nine out of the 22 corps members who were swimming in the said river, told newsmen;
“Information at our disposal revealed that 22 youth corps members currently serving in the state were on a picnic in the River Mayo-Selbe, in the Gashaka LGA on Saturday when the incident happened.
“We were made to understand that while they were swimming in the river, there was a sudden upsurge in the volume of water which swept them away.
“Nine of them drowned while others managed to escape.”
The State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Florence Yaakugh, also confirmed the incident while describing it as most unfortunate. Yaakugh said seven bodies were recovered on Sunday, while the search for the other two bodies initiated by the the locals in collaboration with security agencies and the NYSC also yielded fruits.
