According to the Peoples Gazette, the US Bureau of Prisons announced that it will investigate Ramon “Hushpuppi” Abbas, a Nigerian prisoner serving an 11-year sentence, following the release of a viral video purporting to show Abbas and others having a feast inside what was purported to be his detention facility in Fort Dix, New Jersey.
“We take these matters seriously,” the prison facility told Peoples Gazette, Thursday night, adding that the “investigative department” would take charge of the inquiry to ascertain the facts— or lack thereof— about the viral video.
Recall that on January 22, 2024, Tunde Adekunle, also known as Tunde Ednut, had his birthday. Tunde Adekunle is an ally of Hushpuppi. While supporters and other celebrities celebrated the birthday in Nigeria and other US states, a video emerged purporting to depict a feast of various dishes in what looked to be a jail setting, including jollof rice, pasta, and soda drinks.
“You can see that we are celebrating you in our own little way, Tude Ednut,” a voice in the widely shared video from January 22 that many Nigerians claimed to be Hushpuppi said. “Happy birthday, Tunde Ednut! Fried rice is ready.” The voice continued, “Jollof loading, pasta is here as you can see,” as the man with his face hidden behind the camera presented a selection of foods on a white table.
An examination by The People Gazettes said that it displayed a white-sheeted bed and a grey double bunk. The interior design elements, which evoked images of a prison, fuelled speculation that Abbas was enjoying himself immensely while incarcerated in honor of his friend’s birthday.
