Nigerian-South African beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina opened up about her personal challenges in the world of pageantry.
During an interview on the Big Friday Show with Tacha, a star from Big Brother Naija, she discussed how her dual citizenship led to identity struggles.
Chidimma mentioned that her ambition to be Miss Universe motivated her to enter pageantry as a full-time profession.
“I think it’s something I started recently; however, I’ve had this dream since 2017 to become the next Miss Universe. I’m really glad I have been given the platform and the opportunity to at least try and reach that goal,” she said.
She mentioned that her identity crises sometimes affect her on a personal level.
“I think for me, it has been a long journey. It has been so hard, I won’t lie, there were times when I would cry myself to sleep and be like, ‘Why me? I want it to end.’ There are times when I think that we have to look at the positive side when difficulties like this happen. I also had to change my mindset and see that maybe more of this greatness is coming as well.” she responded.
This interview takes place after Chidimma withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant because the South African Home Office alleged that her mother was involved in fraud and identity theft.
She also encountered significant backlash from South Africans upon being announced as a contestant. After her exit, the Silverbird Group, responsible for the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, invited her to join, and she accepted the offer.
