In response to Israeli airstrikes on Gaza in retaliation for a deadly Hamas attack, thousands of Iraqis flocked to Baghdad’s streets on Friday, according to state television. They came out in support of Palestinians.
The protesters, who had gathered in Tahrir sq after Shiite leader Moqtada Sadr called for a demonstration “in support of Gaza” and against Israel,” chanted “No to the occupation! No to America!” according to AFP journalist.
While a large Israeli flag was placed on the ground for the protesters to step on, they waved Palestinian and Iraqi flags.
According to Abu Kayan, one of the protest’s organizers, “this rally is meant to condemn what is happening in occupied Palestine, the bloodletting and the violation of rights.”
Iraqi security forces are stationed in large numbers close to the rally site, and Moqtada Sadr’s movement has imposed strict security measures there.
Although he is not a part of the government, the fiery Shiite cleric has significant political sway.
However, the Iraqi government, which supports the Palestinian cause, is in favor of the Gaza support movement.
After the Palestinian Islamists stormed Israel’s southern border over the weekend and killed more than 1,200 civilians in the streets and their homes, Israel has launched a war to “destroy” Hamas.
Since then, Israel has been repeatedly bombing Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of 1,537 people.
For “their safety,” the Israeli army ordered residents of Gaza City to leave their homes within 24 hours and move south of the area that was under blockade.
