Nigerian lawmakers according to reports are preparing to introduce a bill that will control bogus news on social media.
Comrade Chinedu Ogah, the Ebonyi State representative for the Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency, made this disclosure in response to social media rumors that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had forged a degree from Chicago State University (CSU).
Ogag predicted that the measure to control the dissemination of false information on social media in Nigeria will soon be adopted by the National Assembly and afterwards signed into law.
According to information obtained by Gistlover , Ogah made this statement to media over the weekend in the capital of Ebonyi State, Abakiliki.
“We at the National Assembly will soon enact a law on fake news essentially to control social media as it is in other countries. And that is to say that whatever people say or write will be regulated. You don’t sit in your room and post whatever you think to write.
“And from my own point of view, those people calling for the resignation of President Tinubu are doing it out of hatred. They have no facts. They believe what is posted on social media. Nigeria has rules; we have a constitution that the people are subjected to,” the lawmaker said
Recall that Atiku Abubakar, a contender for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election, is contesting Tinubu’s designation as the election’s victor by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In his petitions, Atiku claimed that Tinubu had submitted a counterfeit copy of his CSU certificate to INEC in order to qualify for the 2023 elections.
