1- Deji Adeyanju To Remain In Prison Till 2019
Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has been remanded by the Nigerian Police for protesting against the security outfit. Adeyanju, who was arrested on Wednesday by the police, was summarily arraigned alongside Daniel Abobama and Boma Williams at Karshi Magistrate Court, Federal Capital Territory, shortly after his arrest.
2-Strike: Students May Stay Long At Home, Asuu Warns
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (Asuu) says students may spend more time at home since no solid agreement has been reached in its negotiation with the federal government. Asuu national president, Abiodun Ogunyemi, said this on Thursday while speaking with reporters in Lagos. He appealed to parents and students to show understanding, saying the industrial action is meant to avert total collapse of the country’s university system.
3-Presidency Insists Boko Haram ‘Technically Defeated’
President Muhammadu Buhari’s media aide Garba Shehu has insisted that the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists have been “technically defeated”. The presidential spokesman made this comment on Sunrise Daily, a talk show on Channels Television, on Thursday morning, barely two weeks after the terror group killed scores of Nigerian soldiers in Borno state.
4-Finally, Court Fixes Date to Hear Suit Seeking Biafra Republic
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, has fixed February 25, 2019, for the hearing of a suit seeking the actualisation of a sovereign state of Biafra. The suit originally began in the Owerri division of the court before it was transferred to Abuja at the instance of the Federal Government.
5-PDP Asks INEC Chairman, Police Boss To Resign
The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, has called for the resignation of the Chairman of INEC, Yakubu Mahmoud and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris. The PDP Chairman made this known on Thursday while speaking during the 83rd PDP National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja.
6-Again, Boko Haram Kills Nigerian Soldiers
Boko Haram has reportedly killed three Nigerian soldiers in an attack on a military base near Lake Chad in Borno state. According to AFP, the fighters from Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) drove in several trucks into the base in Cross-Kauwa village on Tuesday and engaged troops in an hours-long gunfight.
7-Amosun’s Governorship Candidate Dumps APC, Joins APM
Abiodun Akinlade, the preferred candidate of Gov Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun state, for 2019 governorship election in the southwest state, has defected from the ruling APC to the Allied People’s Movement (APM). Akinlade’s defection to APM was announced at the House of Representatives on Thursday.
8-Why US Should Not Give Atiku Visa – Buhari Govt
The Federal Government has called on the United States to be cautious in granting a visa to the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in order not to create the impression of endorsing him for the 2019 election. Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made the position known at an interactive session with media executives on Thursday.
9-Army Discovers Militia Training Camp In Rivers, Arrests 100 Recruits
Troops of 6 Division Nigerian Army on a routine surveillance at Nonwa Gbam, (NYSC Orientation Camp) in Tai LGA of Rivers State, have discovered an illegal militia training camp. Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, who made this known in a statement on Thursday, said over 100 recruits were seen undergoing a military type of training. The recruits and their trainers have been arrested.
10-AWCON: Pinnick Doubles Falcons Win Bonus Ahead Banyana Clash
President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick on Thursday promised to double the win bonus for the Super Falcons’ final clash with South Africa at the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Ghana. The Nigerian ladies were paid 3,000 dollars for a win in the group phase but the football house increased the win bonus to 5,000 dollars for the Final.
