A newlywed couple, Dozie and Joan Okoye, tragically lost their lives in a fatal gas tanker explosion on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, just weeks after celebrating their wedding.
The couple, who exchanged vows on February 22, 2025, were among the victims of the explosion that occurred on the night of Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
According to sources, the Okoyes were on their way home when their phones suddenly became unreachable. Concerned family members launched a frantic search, visiting the Burns Center in Gbagada and the Yaba Mortuary, where they were met with the devastating confirmation of their passing. Their charred remains were identified only by their vehicle’s registration number, found among the wreckage of burnt-out cars at the scene.
Authorities have linked the explosion, which occurred around 8:08 p.m., to a 30-tonne gas tanker believed to be owned by a nearby gas station. Investigations suggest the tanker was responsible for the catastrophic blast.
Beyond the loss of lives, the explosion caused extensive destruction to nearby structures. The De-Twist Dental Clinic suffered severe damage, while the generator house and security post of a neighboring church were also impacted.
Among the four victims identified was Rotimi Adeleye, an auto mechanic who was caught in the explosion.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the tragic incident as families mourn their loved ones.
