A Nigerian Uber driver has recounted a troubling encounter with police officers who allegedly extorted ₦150,000 from his passenger en route to the airport and even attempted to offer him a share of the money.
Sharing his experience on X (formerly Twitter), the driver revealed that the incident occurred in Maryland, where officers stopped his vehicle and took possession of the passenger’s phone. The officers reportedly negotiated and facilitated the payment before coercing the passenger into handing over the sum.
Following the transaction, the police allegedly requested the driver’s account details, intending to send him a portion of the extorted funds. However, he refused to accept any part of the money.
Recounting the incident, he wrote:
“I’m an Uber driver. On our way to the airport in Maryland, we were stopped by the police. They asked my passenger to step out, took his phone, and negotiated with him. One of the officers later approached me and asked for my account number. I was shocked and told him I wasn’t interested.”
“Their boss even called to tell me that they always ‘appreciate’ drivers who bring them big fish. The passenger ended up giving them ₦150,000 and still missed his flight.”
