A lecturer, an Associate Professor of Botany in the University of Lagos was detained by agents of the Lagos State Police Command after they learned that he had allegedly raped a female student at the school.
The 20-year-old student, whose name has been withheld, charged Babalola with the crime when she went to the lecturer’s office to discuss problems with her grades.
It was discovered that the victim informed the Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation about the incident, mentioning that the alleged assault took place on August 16, 2023.
The UNILAG Vice-Chancellor was given a seven-day deadline to produce the professor after the NGO later reported the case to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command. As a result, the warrant for Babalola’s arrest was issued by the state High Court by the police commissioner, Idowu Owohunwa.
Additionally, it was learned that Babalola confessed to the crime when the Vice-Chancellor called him in for questioning.
In a phone call with Vanguard, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and said, “He has been arrested and is currently in our custody; he will be arraigned in court in the coming days, and we will keep the public informed. “.
