A tragic incident unfolded in Imo State when a school proprietor allegedly shot and killed a 13-year-old student, Paul Victor, for entering his compound to retrieve a football.
The unfortunate event occurred on Monday in the Area N, World Bank Housing region of Owerri. Reports indicate that Paul, a student of Urban Secondary School, had climbed over the school fence into the man’s property after a ball from their game landed there.
Enraged by the intrusion, the property owner, identified as 64-year-old Donald Mbamah, allegedly shot the boy twice in the buttocks. Paul was rushed to a specialist hospital, where he fought for his life. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, March 20, following surgery, as confirmed by his guardian, Mr. Jonathan Odikanwa.
In response to the tragedy, authorities arrested Mbamah and transferred him to the State Criminal Investigations Department for further interrogation.
The incident sparked outrage among students, believed to be Paul’s classmates, who were captured in a viral video vandalizing the suspect’s school and vehicle in a show of anger and grief. The footage also depicted students mourning Paul at the school premises.
Authorities continue to investigate the case as the community grapples with the heartbreaking loss.
