Nigerian online activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely recognized as Verydarkman (VDM), has commented on the distressing case involving 53-year-old French woman Anne, who fell victim to a scam that resulted in the loss of her entire life savings—an astonishing $850,000 (over ₦1.5 billion).
This intricate fraud, executed by online scammers impersonating Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, has garnered international attention and widespread condemnation due to its audacity and cruelty.
Anne, who was led to believe she was in a romantic relationship with the 61-year-old actor, disclosed how the scammers exploited her emotions through a sophisticated web of deceit. They reportedly utilized AI-generated images and concocted narratives, including false claims that Brad Pitt required urgent surgery for kidney cancer and that his financial accounts had been frozen by his ex-wife, Angelina Jolie.
Manipulated by these emotional tactics, Anne transferred her life savings to what she thought was an account intended to assist the ailing actor, only to later discover the heartbreaking reality.
As investigations continue, her legal representatives have implicated three Nigerians in orchestrating this elaborate scam.
In response to the situation, Verydarkman expressed his astonishment on his official Facebook page regarding the alleged involvement of Nigerian Yahoo boys in such a callous act. In a passionate video that rapidly gained traction, he delivered a sharp critique of the offenders and the wider Yahoo culture.
In addition to denouncing their actions, VDM also probed into the mentality that compels many fraudsters to recklessly waste their ill-gotten gains.
Verydarkman vividly depicted how money obtained through deception is frequently squandered on trivial pursuits—extravagant lifestyles, luxury vehicles, and ephemeral pleasures—without any consideration for the future or the suffering inflicted upon victims.
In a striking and insightful shift, he redirected the discussion towards a more positive outlook, providing an unrequested financial tutorial to the wrongdoers. He encouraged them to reconsider their methods, contending that although their activities were unlawful, they could still channel the misappropriated resources into worthwhile initiatives that would serve their communities.
With fervor, VDM emphasized the potential for these substantial amounts to be allocated to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and entrepreneurship—avenues that could enhance their regions and support Nigeria’s progress.
