Former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro believes that Victor Boniface’s absence caused the team to play limited football at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Bayer Leverkusen player, who was set to spearhead the Super Eagles attack with Victor Osimhen, sustained an injury during the team’s training camp in Abu Dhabi a few days before the tournament began and was forced to withdraw.
The Portuguese strategist, whose contract with the Super Eagles expired last month, believes Boniface’s presence would have made a significant difference in the tournament.
“I will say that Boniface would have made the difference without injury,” he said in an interview in Portugal, according to AfricafootUnited.
“He was very confident and can play comfortably in our two-man attacking style. He can also play on both sides of the strikers and that would have made him our invisible arc in the tournament.
“Our options to refine our style were limited in his absence.”
The Super Eagles lost the final to host Ivory Coast 2-1.
