Video Of Rema Remarks About Not Being Recognized Properly Sparks Criticism

Nigerian music artist Divine Ikubor, known as Rema, has stirred controversy with his remarks about his influence on the Nigerian music scene and the expansion of Afrobeats outside Africa.

He expressed that he feels he is not receiving the recognition he deserves for his contributions.

The Mavin artist, known for his song Ozeba that landed at number two on Rolling Stone’s 40 Best Afropop Songs of 2024, discussed his impact on The Breakfast Club show. He mentioned that the success of his song played a role in creating a unique award category for Afrobeats.

“My impact in Afrobeats to the world is huge, it is not by hit songs,” Rema said.

The singer of “Calm Down” talked about his performances at three different arenas in India, where fans joyfully sang along to Afrobeats.

Rema feels that these accomplishments should earn him recognition similar to that of Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid, who are the top artists in the music scene.

At the end of the video, Rema hinted that his younger age might be why he isn’t getting the recognition he thinks he deserves, as the big three are all over thirty.

“Must I be 30 years old before they give me my flowers?” Rema asked.
