What Allegedly Led to The Latest Wizkid and Davido Beef

The latest conflict between Wizkid and Davido was allegedly triggered by comments and revelations related to a recent endorsement deal.

It began when Wizkid claimed that the global sportswear brand Puma initially approached him with a multi-million-dollar deal but later moved on to Davido. According to Wizkid, he turned down the offer because the brand couldn’t meet his financial expectations, which led to Davido eventually signing the deal.

Puma initially approached Wizkid with a multi-million-dollar endorsement deal, but ultimately, it was Davido who signed the agreement. Over the years, both artists have significantly impacted the music industry and culture, but their friendship has experienced its fair share of highs and lows. The latest incident between them has raised questions about whether they will ever mend their relationship.

The conflict started when Wizkid revealed that Puma had initially contacted him for the deal before they shifted their attention to Davido. According to Wizkid, he declined the offer because the brand couldn’t meet his financial expectations. He emphasized that while he had no issues with Davido securing the deal, he believed the proposed budget didn’t align with his perceived value and status.

During a recent social media exchange, tech guru Nelson Elpega commented on the situation, sparking an intense verbal battle between Wizkid and himself. Nelson alleged that Puma opted for Davido because of his higher relevance and visibility in the current music scene. He argued that Wizkid’s presence had diminished, stating: “Wizkid, you haven’t had a hit in the last four years. You’re now a junior to artists like Ayra Starr, Tems, and Rema. Meanwhile, Davido is out there in the United States, unveiling his Puma collection!”

Wizkid wasted no time in responding to Nelson’s claims. He addressed the speculation, explaining that he turned down Puma’s offer because they were no longer willing to pay him the amount he demanded. “I’m not jealous of Davido or any other artist. I love them all and respect their success. However, I’m on a different level when it comes to my worth,” he asserted.

Nelson fired back, arguing that Puma, a brand worth $6.1 billion, could certainly afford to pay Wizkid what he wanted if they felt he was the right fit. “It’s not that they couldn’t afford you; it’s that they chose not to, because Davido’s relevance and appeal are currently higher,” Nelson insisted.

Wizkid maintained his stance, explaining that while he acknowledges Puma’s value as a major global brand, their budget for the African market did not match his expectations. “I have no problem with Davido landing the deal. It was a good fit for him and the budget was suitable for his brand. But for me, it wasn’t the right financial decision,” Wizkid clarified.

The back-and-forth between Wizkid and Nelson highlights the tension between the two top Nigerian music stars and the evolving dynamics of brand endorsements in the entertainment industry. With both artists being major influencers, brands often find themselves having to choose between them, which can create misunderstandings and fuel rivalry.

Wizkid’s decision to turn down the Puma deal was not just about the money; it was about positioning himself at a level he feels is appropriate for his brand. On the other hand, Davido’s acceptance of the deal demonstrates his strategic move to increase his global reach and commercial partnerships.

Whether this latest incident will deepen the rift between the two or serve as a wake-up call for reconciliation remains to be seen. For now, both artists continue to dominate the industry in their own unique ways, contributing to the culture and elevating the African music scene on a global scale.
