“What my late wife did to secure my release from prison” – Olusegun Obasanjo

  • Former President Olusegun Obasanjo praised his late wife, Stella, for her significant role in securing his release from prison.
    • Obasanjo, imprisoned under General Sani Abacha’s regime, was later released by AbdulSalam Abubakar’s administration, leading to his presidency.
    • Stella Obasanjo, from Edo State, advocated for his release and became the First Lady before his death during his second term.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently reflected on his imprisonment, emphasizing the significant influence his late wife, Stella, had in facilitating his release.

Obasanjo recounted his incarceration during General Sani Abacha’s regime, where he faced allegations of participating in a coup. His release came about under the administration of AbdulSalam Abubakar, following Abacha’s demise, which subsequently paved the way for his presidency.

Stella Obasanjo, hailing from Edo State, was a fervent advocate for his freedom and later served as First Lady until her untimely death during his second term.

In his reflections, the 87-year-old commended Stella’s unwavering dedication, stating, “My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive. She was in Vatican City, France and other parts of the world. I had it all coming out of prison.” He added, “No amount of honour would be too much for the role she played.”

Obasanjo conveyed his heartfelt appreciation for the tribute paid to Stella through the establishment of a hospital, asserting, “I had a woman who made tremendous contributions to my achievements in public life.”

Additionally, he acknowledged the contributions of Governor Godwin Obaseki in the hospital initiative, commending him for his effective leadership. He also reminisced about his collaboration with former Governor John Odigie Oyegun, whom he regarded as an outstanding permanent secretary.

“With this hospital, you’re assured of first-class treatment for any ailment,” he said. “More grace to the elbows of the governor. With this kind of edifice, I can say that the governor started well and is finishing well.”
