Singer Asake recently explained why he chose to feature Wizkid on the first track of his upcoming album, “Lungu Boy.”
On August 6, 2024, he revealed the album’s tracklist, which includes collaborations with five international artists, including Grammy winner Wizkid, Travis Scott, Stormzy, Central Cee, and Ludmilla.
The opening song, “MMS,” features Wizkid. Asake initially set aside $500,000 (N800M) to pay Wizkid for a verse, but Wizkid declined the offer, opting to provide a free verse instead, citing that Asake couldn’t meet his usual fee.
Asake praised Wizkid for his musical talent and the valuable career advice he offers during their studio sessions.
Asake said; “When I contacted Wizkid to be on my album, I thought he would ask me for money, so I was already preparing $500k to offer him. When I finally texted him about the song, I was shocked by his reply. He told me, ‘Asake, if I ask you to pay me for a verse, you wouldn’t be able to afford it. We are all Naija, and I love what you are doing for Afrobeats. Anytime you are free, come meet me in the studio; let’s do something together. I can’t charge my own people for verses. It’s either I like the song and give you a free verse, or I don’t reply to you at all.’
The next thing I knew, I was in the studio with him, and he was advising me on how to push my career forward. I just had to put my song with him as the first track on my album because it felt like a dream come true.” Asake
