“Why our female colleagues don’t beg for financial help” – Daniel Etim Effiong

In a recent episode of the popular “Bad and Bougie Podcast,” Nigerian actor Daniel Etim Effiong spoke with hosts Moet Abebe and Tolani Baj about the differences between male and female actors in seeking financial assistance in Nigeria.

Daniel Etim responded to Moet Abebe’s question about the apparent disparity between male and female actors seeking public financial assistance.

He discussed the strong societal norms that influence these behaviours, as well as the traditional expectations placed on men in many Nigerian communities.

These cultural norms, according to Effiong, dictate that men are traditionally responsible for shouldering financial burdens not only for themselves but also for the women in their lives.

This expectation, he argued, contributes to men seeking financial assistance being more visible than women, who may receive assistance more discreetly.

The actor emphasised that men often handle their financial problems quietly rather than seeking assistance from women.

He explained that, in the traditional Nigerian context, a man’s priority when it comes to earning money is frequently focused on ensuring the well-being of his family.

In times of financial difficulty, men are more likely to seek public assistance, adhering to societal norms that consider it unusual for women to financially support men.
