Why Sanusi Lamido Married an Underage Girl before His Dethronement

Absence only makes the heart grow fonder, and Emir Sanusi’s heart has certainly been longing for the woman of his nightly dreams for four long years.

The former Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi got married to Sa’adatu Barkindo Mustapha who is the daughter of the Lamido of Adamawa. The new bride joins his three previous wives — Sadiya, Maryam and Rukiya, respectively.

A cursory observer might wonder what is special or new a husband of three wives could ever hope to find in a fourth; especially a fourth who, at just 22 years of age, must be considered very young in certain circles.

Well, as a devout Muslim, this is what the Koran says:

First of all, the Quran instructs Muslims that Mohammed is their pattern of conduct. Surah 33:21 says:

“Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day”.

This means that Muslims have to do whatever Messenger of Allah did. He is their example.

Let’s see what the Messenger of Allah did. He married Aisha, who was six or seven years old and consummated the marriage when she was nine.

However, we may say all that is history now. The secret wedding of four years ago, contracted when the bride was 18 and a secondary school – leaver, has changed into a blissful matrimony today as she’s now a graduate from a university in the United Kingdom nursing high hopes for a happy lifetime with the former paramount ruler.
