Actor Chiwetalu Agu has expressed his admiration for singer Yemi Alade, commending her for her representation of African culture through her attire at the 66th Grammy Awards, despite not securing an award.
In a video shared on Instagram late Tuesday, the 69-year-old actor praised Alade for her commitment to Afrobeats and her celebration of African heritage.
“Yemi Alade, you are a queen. You may not have won the Grammy, but you clearly won my heart,” Agu said. “If nobody will say it, I, Chief Chiwetalu Agu, will give you your flowers while you can still smell them.”
He emphasized Alade’s role in promoting Afrobeats on an international platform and her pride in her cultural roots as reflected in her fashion choices.
“You are putting African culture on the world map. Your outfit was screaming, ‘I did not come to impress you, I know my roots,’” he added.
Agu further characterized Alade as a talented, disciplined individual and a source of inspiration for young women.
“Do we talk about how decent and natural you have been as an artiste or how beautiful you are as a woman? You carry yourself as a lady, a role model. Yemi, keep being the inspiration you are to many young girls,” he said.
He concluded his message with heartfelt admiration and a lighthearted reference to Alade’s popular song, “Johnny.”
“Chief Chiwetalu Agu admires and loves you so much. I pray you find Johnny at the right time,” he said.
His remarks have generated considerable online engagement, with many praising his support for the artist.
