Young John Talks About His Religious Upbringing

Afrobeat artist, Young John recently spoke with Saige Jones about his history and personal life.

The producer-turned-singer claimed that he grew up in a profoundly devout family where both parents were pastors.

Young John explained, “I grew up in a religious home. Both my mum and dad were pastors. My mum had a school. She was a psychologist.” He added that his musical journey began in the church, where he played drums and keyboard.

The artist reflects on how his childhood experiences affected his understanding of love.. “When I was really young, I believed in love so much because of what I used to see between my parents,” he said. However, he noted that his perspective changed as he grew older and experienced the wider world.

Young John also discussed a personal tragedy, revealing that he lost his mother to cancer. “My mum is late now. We lost her to cancer. It happened a while ago. I’m over it now,” he stated, indicating that he has come to terms with the loss.

In other news, Serena Williams, originally from Compton, had a past romance with Canadian rapper Drake back in 2015. Now, she is happily married to Alexis Ohanian, the founder of Reddit.

Drake refers to Alexis as a “groupie” on his 2022 song “Middle of the Ocean,” expecting no repercussions.

In reaction, Alexis took to X, previously known as Twitter, saying, “The reason I stay winning is because I’m relentless about being the absolute best at whatever I do. Including being the best groupie for my wife and daughter.”

During Drake’s rivalry with Kendrick Lamar, Serena’s name came up again when Kendrick appeared to address Drake’s past rudeness in a diss track.

According to Complex, Serena finally reacted on “Not Like Us” at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture, calling it her favorite music. She told moderator Cari Champion that it’s her “jam” and inspires her to Crip Walk.

“I love that song. It’s like the hit of the summer. When they play that jam, I’m jamming,” said Williams. “That jam is jamming. You definitely Crip walking in that song. It’s so cool what he did though. Bringing everyone to the stage? That was incredible … I couldn’t believe it.”
